The Realm of Tumlar is the home of Usael of the Waters.
There are cities beneath the sea that land walkers never see; places they are forbidden to go. Those that ply the sea as their trade - the fishermen, the traders, even those whose piracy these folk fear- understand that their livelihood and their very lives depend upon Usael's beneficence.
When the things and people that they love are taken by the sea, they know that it is the way of things, and no matter the sting and the pain, they must accept it: for that is the decision of the angel Usael, and it is right, and it is not to be questioned.
The nameless Mariner's young bride was taken from him in a storm. He could not accept the loss of his beloved, and prayed to Usael to unite them again.
In a storm as strong as the one that claimed his bride, he saw Usael, larger than the cliffs that towered in the north, striding into the waves. As the Mariner stood at the shore and watched him, crying out for the return of his wife, Usael glanced over his shoulder. The Mariner saw the key of the Angel inscribed upon the heel of his monolithic foot.
At that moment he was possesed with the conviction that his wife was not lost to him, not if his devotion was strong enough, not if he had the courage to leave behind the land and all he knew to seek out the secrets of the strange sea. And so he cast off in his small boat, a single man and a singular dream.
There are many tales told in many ports of the Mariner. These tales span hundreds of years, longer than any mortal fisherman's life, so it is not known if they are to be trusted. But if they are true, then the Mariner did indeed travel wide and far and long, and learn many deep secrets of the sea, secrets not normally given to men to know by the grace of Usael.
In the end, some of the tales told say that he found his way beneath the sea, where castles and narrow streets and grottos are lit by luminescent lanterns, where cities along volcanic rifts farm stands of waving kelp. In the deepest and grandest city of them all, perhaps again he found his young bride, seperated by gulfs of years and briney water and angel's secrets...

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
